Visiting Uganda, Nov 2000 & July2001 by AFRICA on 30 September 2002 8:58pm

I've visited Uganda twice in the last few years and was totally gobsmacked from the experience. My first visit was the most special as I'd never travelled beyond Europe before. About 6 months before my first trip I watched Michael Palin visiting Murchison Falls in 'Hemingway's Adventure' and could not wait to experience what he had seen. I have to admit that I too have an urge to travel, perhaps because it's been passed on to me from my father. When I arrived in Kampala I got the chance of taking a flight in a light aircraft with two friends and a man who took part in the filming of the Murchison Falls footage for the programme. I didn't manage to persuade the pilot to fly through the falls, however!
It is something I will never forget, but then there are many things about Uganda that are unforgettable and I intend to go back as soon as I can! To beable to travel around another country or continent for me is the ultimate experience. Do it if you can.

I too have visited Uganda and murchisson Falls. Again, like AFRICA, it was my first time out of Europe. It was a mind-blowing, if extremely scary at times, experience! I was lucky enought to travel all around the country-Kampala, Murchisson Falls, Lira, Mount Elgon national Park, Jinja but perhaps what was the best and most moving part of my stay were the four nights i stayed with my Uncle's relations in a tiny village in the North. This was an opportunity granted to very few westerners and the chance to live amongst Africans and experience their way of life was something I'll never ever forget.

How long did you stay in Uganda, Maz? Sounds like you covered quite a bit. What was Lira and Mount Elgon National Park like? Do you think you'll go again? If I raise enough funds I'll go back next year. I mainly stayed around Kasese after visiting Kampala and Murchison. I got the opportunity of helping out at a community radio station and ran some media studies workshops with pupils from a local school. I still get goosebumps just thinking about it! If I'm ever having a naff day I remind myself of the amazing adventures I had there.
