The Chatter Box : Blathering On
UK Palin Convention by RichB on 3 January 2003 4:01am
Palinites, one and all, I would urge you to read Lyn's comments in the 'Palinites getting together' thread regarding such an event taking place. As Lyn rightly mentions the best chance we have of getting Michael to attend is to hold it in or near London. Simply, a venue would be booked and the Palinites would converge, with or without Michael (with obviously preferable). We would converse, make merry and a jolly good time would be had by all. We would all then go our seperate ways until the next time.

What we're looking for initially is a headcount of people who would be wiiling to attend. As we know Michael has Australia and New Zealand in Jan/Feb then USA and Canada in April. Apart from that we don't really know, so if we can lodge a request with Mayday/Alison Davies as soon as we can, maybe we can book Michael and arrange our gathering accordingly.

As Lyn breathed new life into this she may be willing to arrange it, nevertheless if anyone lives in or around London or perhaps has expertise in such matters please make yourself known and we can take this forward.

Please feel free to add suggestions to this as it is only a bare template at the moment, but let's make this a reality. An idea of mine was to ask if Michael would do a booksigning and general talk about all his travels purely for the 'palinstravels' regulars sometime this year. Maybe this could be combined with an evening shindig too.

I do feel sorry that we're excluding our overseas compatriates here but like Patrick did recently, it would be great to see you all in London and of course you are free to organise your own get togethers.

So come on UK Palinites let's hear from you and let's make this happen.

I wouldn't be able to make a UK one, but just a suggestion...in the e-list I'm on, we have a big festival during a weekend in October every year. One of the things done there is a raffle, where folks from the list all send in merchandise/items of the artist as donations which are then raffled off at the festivities. The cool thing is that you don't have to be there to donate or to receive. If you buy a ticket (the proceeds go to benefit the Bridge School foundation in California), no matter where you are in the world when the raffle is taking place, your number could be drawn and you could win an item. And, of course, it's then sent to you in the mail.

Anyway, I know some of us have various Michael signatures, merchandise and memorabilia that we might be willing to share with Palinites for a good cause, so... Just a suggestion.

The raffle has really made some happy people and created some really neat effects in the past. Thought I'd bring the idea up for you guys to bounce around. :O)

I'm sure we can do that, perhaps Michael himself will donate! Thanks

A Palin convention sounds good.

Would it just a be a day thing?

What would the day consist of?

I would give a signed sahara if necessary - as the mangement dont give this out as yet for charity, but perhaps they could give out photos? etc. I will have to wait a bit before I could contact the friend who organises the neil celebration Rich - they have a meeting in the afternoon with video and quiz - then a meal then disco? I think, but havent been before so will have to wait to end of Jan for more info.
perhaps ours could be video of one of michaels episodes? or one that mayday may have for us - or/and talk by Michael - and then quiz and mingling with Michael over a buffet? (no spam please or marmite!)Literary Luncheon convention as they have in NZ and at a very reasonable cost - could the management organise something for us on that basis - wow - brilliant- that consists of talk by Michael luncheon and mingling time and then book signing -( or photo signing) will ask Ellenpc for details of it and see if Mayday could come up with something like that for us to have priority booking and if any tickets left (!!) could be sold on

I am busy at the mo but come beginning of feb things should ease, and I dont mind helping out (my son will be back at uni then!)but we could do with a committee to organise it - not of many people but more than one - as it would be hard work for one to do all the paperwork and web info etc.

We need to contact Mayday and ask - could you do this rich? or do you want me to ask for any advice they could give - it will take some time to get an answer, so sooner we ask the better. we dont necessarily need to have too much going on the first time, need to find our feet.

would have to be places booked in advance in case we get too many to cope with? we have several threads for this can we amalgamate them?- dont quite know where to write at the moment. mmmm ideas forming in brain - must contact Alison asap if they are not too busy with organising the down under tour!
If two of us ask Rich do you think they will listen more? might do?!

lets go for it and se what happens - one life - if you dont ask you dont get.

Must stop discussing and see what we can do>

Lyn wishing she lived in NZ
