What to wear? by Valarie on 23 August 2004 6:01pm
I'll be in London, Paris, Bruge and Amsterdam from Sept 18 - Oct 2. It's been a long time since I traveled this far, and I've never been gone this long. Can anyone give me suggestions as to how to pack?

..travel light, light, light....really comfortable shoes are a neccesity and light, light raingear (of course it NEVER rains in London, etc.but be prepared anyway?!) as to the light, if you cannot carry it easily, stop , repack and start again! Have fun, wish I could travel with you and your light baggage!

I agree with macauley - the weather has already started to 'change' here and Paris, Bruge and Amsterdam always have similar weather to London. At the moment its a bit windy and we are having a lot of rain so bring your brolly! You will definately need comfy shoes and its much quicker to walk and see more of the city than use public transport - but hiring a bike is a nice idea! Wear layers so you can take them off if you get too hot, I found that the best way to cope! have a fabulous time!

a light rain jacket would be a good help as it is not freezing cold but it is very wet on and off so you will need something to cover you but nothing to heavy or otherwise you could roast . i always find a couple of storng pairs of jeans to come in handy and a few t shirts and some light junmpers abd comfy shoes are good for a place like london . what part of the world are you comming form ?

I'm coming from Portland, Oregon, USA, which has a fairly mild climate and is known for being rainy. It's rarely a hard, driving rain, though. It's more like rainy in the morning, sunny in the afternoon, drizzle after that, sunny again, rainy throughout the night. I kind of picture London/Paris/Amsterdam to be like that, too. Does that seem right?

This year has been the wettest August since records began in the UK.
Last August we had the hottest temperature ever recorded (100 degrees).
Therefore, the British weather is very unpredictable. However they are extremes. The weather in Northern Europe (apart from Scandinavia) does sound similar to yours.

Valerie; don't be fooled by all the rainy talk. I've got it on good authority that September/October is going to be real heatwave here in London, early 90's or was that just wishful thinking or a dream..... fellow Englanders

Get a suitcase or two. Lay the first one on the bed and fill it with the things you will need and the clothes you want for changing into after your second bath. If you bath every day use the second suitcase.
