RTW TRAVEL NO PLANES by kenofcork on 19 September 2004 6:36am
I'm planning a round the world trip for early 05 and don't want to use planes. I've pretty much mapped my route to Oz via China but how do I get across the Pacific without BBC pull?
Any ideas would be cool. I'm also thinking about working on a cruise ship to keep costs down for part of the trip, anyone any experience.
All input is appreciated just don't tell me I'm mad.

Without 'BBC pull' I think you'd need a year to complete the journey and without using planes a fairly big purse would also be needed. From Oz across the Pacific I'm sure there are cruise liners that would go to New Zealand but from New Zealand to Chile or somewhere up the West American coast sounds less easy to achieve... I have just had a quick look at an NZ travel site and it may be possible to do your Pacific crossing via one or more of the Pacific Islands e.g to Fiji then Samoa then Hawaii then North America. This would require detailed investigation and a long term plan to organise it. Good luck.

I believe it's possible, like Michael, to get passenger places on container vessels. However there are limitations on passengers entering/leaving the USA in this manner. I stumbled across something on the internet the other day but didn't bookmark the page.

Another way is london-Moscow-TransSiberian train to Vladivostok,Ferry to Japan. You will still have the problem of crossing the Pacific and entry to the USA may be difficult if not by normal routes.
If you do the trip I'm sure you'll have a great time...

Cheers lads,
At the moment I'm thinking of using cruise ships to cross the Pacific From New Zealand and the Carribbean then up to Florida from what I hear this is possible but a large slice of luck is needed. Then its back to Europe via Greenalnd and Iceland I've got that pretty much sorted through a Canadien company but again timing could be everything. Another possiblity of course is to head back up through China to the Bering Strait but surely thats far too cool to even consider?
