I'm new to the group having found out about the website from Michael himself last Saturday. He was at a centenary day for his old Sheffield school, Birkdale, where I also went - but did not know him. Michael was taught geography at Birkdale by my father and claims that this is where his wanderlust started! My brother who also attended on Saturday had the honour of taking Michael back to Sheffield station in his car - he says this has put the value of it up by £10,000!!

Welcome Nigel- thats so cool to meet michael like that and have a connection with him, so michael promotes the website and the palinites - good for him!!

Hi Nigel, Will your brother take me for a ride in his car:-)
Re: meeting michael by Nigel Hall on 29 September 2004 8:08am
Thanks for the warm welcome. I've met Michael a few times at his book signings in Sheffield and also when he recorded "Comic Roots" programme for the BBC in 1983. My father, John,(who appears on the aforementioned prog., has all of his travel books autographed at home. If anyone has read the Margolis biog. of Michael, my father gets a brief mention in there.

My Mum, who had a matronly role at Birkdale, has vivid memories of bandaging Michael's knee when he cut it badly as a young boy. It was such a deep injury that my Mum thinks he must still have the scar.

When he arrived at Birkdale before lunch on Saturday, Michael presented a couple of autographed Himalaya books, one to the current head and one to my father.

Not knowing how much chance I would have to talk to Michael later, I was keen to tell him how my Downs Syndrome daughter Lucy laughs herself silly whenever we play the Ministry of Silly Walks sketch on video. "That was an inspired piece of writing!" Michael replied.

Michael spent time trying to spot himself on old school photos and we then all trekked (good word for Michael) up to the top floor to see his old geography room where he briefly sat in on a lesson which was taking place. It was here he told me about this site after I said that I'd previously done an unsuccessful internet search.

A buffet lunch took place in a marquee and yes, Michael queued to get his food like everyone else! He seemed to know quite a few of his old contemporaries who were there and chatted with them while eating - NOT a quiet lunch for him!

Towards the end he was presented with a bottle of champagne before having to dash back for the London train which he was worried about missing because of all the Sheffield Saturday traffic.

Unfortunately I wasn't in my brother Tim's car with Michael although my parents were and I've told Tim he missed a trick by not kidnapping him for ransom! Tim lives in Llandudno and will allow fans to sit in his car for a fee!

I have a pictures of all this in case you think I'm making it up!

Oh, you must post them somewhere so we can enjoy them, Nigel! It would really be fun seeing him in his old surroundings of yesteryear!
