Hi sianefx - I went to Melbourne a couple of years back. My main reason for going there was to drive the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne to Portland, and it was really great, so I recommend that if you get the chance. Spent a couple of days in Melbourne itself, which I really enjoyed. A great city to walk around and explore, and you can use the trams to get around as well. Took a tram down to St Kilda, which is Melbourne's beach resort, but I can't remember if there was any surfing down there. Lots of people cycling and jogging however.

Just outside Melbourne, along the Gt Ocean Road, I vaguely remember that Torquay and Bells Beach seemed to be surfy sort of places - could be worth investigating if they do surfing lessons.

Enjoy your trip!
