Inter-rail anyone? by Mad Guida on 26 November 2004 12:03pm

I'm not even sure of how do you spell it: interail or inter-rail?

Well, I would like to hear your thoughts/experiences about it anyway. I'm planning to do one this summer, to the South of France.

Has anyone been there? any tips or usefull things?

Thanks for reading,

My son used this a few years ago and went as far as Turkey. You can also use it on ferries around the Greek islands. He had a great time.

I bought one a few years ago, and I used it mostly to mop up the small European countries I'd never been to, such as Leichtenstein (sp?), Andorra, Monaco and San Marino, although I also chalked up Slovenia, Malta, France, Italy and Switzerland.
It's not bad, although once you've got one, you still have to pay a supplement to travel on some trains (not all). Worth it if, like me, you enjoy chalking up new countries for the sake of it. Happy travelling!

Thanks Tusker and Treelooney!

I wanted to fo either to France (I like the south better) or Italy, but the Greek Islands roundabout that Tusker suggested is not a bad idea as well.

Though, I don't want to do it alone, so I'm trying to gather some buddies to come along.

I have a good friends, who already trekked half the globe, who once did interails. He told me he only had trouble catching rains and sometimes with lodging.

What do you have to comment on this?

I would suggest you avoid the peak summer months if you're going to do this. July and August are a bit of a nightmare in Europe. Southern Europe in particular is very hot, the prices are sky-high at that time, a lot of places are full, people are in a bad mood and it's just not a good time to go.
When I did Inter-Rail I went in late September and October. So much better. The heat even in Italy was mellow, the beaches were empty, there were loads of places to stay, and everyone was welcoming. It was such a relaxing trip.
The same also applies to other holidays, of course, but DIY trips in particular, such as Inter-Rail is.
Best wishes to you.
Bill.
