Volunteering abroad - your experiences by dazzle_h on 9 December 2004 1:17am
I'm interested to hear of your experiences whilst on overseas volunteer programmes - both the good things and the bad things!

If you have any interesting stories about the projects you've worked on and the people you've worked with please post and let me know.

I was in the past a VSO volunteer for five and a half years in Papua New Guinea and Kenya, but that was in the 1980s so probably too long ago to be of particular interest to you now. I have also been more recently though a trainer for outgoing volunteers for VSO (the British volunteering organisation) so could probably contribute something more up to date if that is what you are requesting?

3 years ago I volunteered for 6 months at an organistaion in Pune, India, teaching craft classes and English to children and adults, amongst many other things! Teaching to the children was probably the most fun as they were very enthusiastic and talented and teaching to the adults the worst as they weren't very interested in learning and just wanted to gossip.
The people volunteering with me were from all over the world, and I made some very good friends there. I didn't get on with some people, but I guess that can happen in any situation in life!
