Hello I am 17 and will be going on my gap year in 2006 and in need of some contacts to stay with who has local knowledge as I intend to write a small travel journal and would like as much information to the countries I am to be visting. I will be visiting: Eygpt, Kenya, South Africa, India (Northen with monks), Thailand, Hong Kong, Vietnam, New Zeland, Australlia, Los Angeles. But am also open to other counties.
Thank you

It’s easy to meet plenty of locals when you're out there anyway,James. Finding and making your own contacts over time will be much more satisfying that turning up at pre-arranged contact through somebody else. Given the nature of some of the countries you're going to,you will see how you wont need to arrange anything in advance. Just travelling, you'll learn so much and meet so many local people. It's amazing what you pick up from it.

Aside from the many friendly locals out there with money making intentions (freelance guides etc),you will also meet genuine locals who are only to happy to invite you home and things. But it does take a certain "sixth sense" to work out the scammers and money grabbers from genuine people though. Takes practice. I would advise you to “expect” to be burnt a few times initially. Simply because overtrust and enthusiasm tends to blind us initially (and they like going for younger ones who are more likely to be trusting and believe great promises...I know this from earlier experience). If you need any help or advice about that, just ask on here. Some of us have lots of advice about that which you may find usefull.

Hey - I'm looking to go a-wandering around that same time as well! Although, WHSmiths are being a bit slow with sorting my contract out, so who knows whether I'll have enough money to attempt to see more than one country. I'm pretty sure my grandparents might help me out a bit, as they've been to lotsa different places, but it's all a bit up in the air at the moment, really.

Do you mind if I ask your current location, Dunn.jh? =)

Hi, I've lived in Kenya a few years back and traveled extensively through East Africa.
I agree with Godfather about finding new contacts, but in case you need any advice about these places, just feel free...

I'm in Manchester, proud new home of that huge Bang sculpture thingy.

I had the idea of going all around Britain by bus. Only problem is I'm prone to travel sickness. D'oh.
