How far would you go...? by xine on 18 December 2004 6:06am
for a holiday?
I was in Phuket, Thailand recently and while queuing at the immigration checkpoint, noticed a plane from Heksinki had just landed and then there were these hundreds of Europeans. They must have endured 12? 13 hours of flight to get to Phuket for their sun, sea and sand resort holiday. I know I will not endure more than 4 hours of travel to get to my resort.

Well I, like 10s of thousanda of others have holidayed in Australis and that is a 22 hour flight from London.

I also did it the long way round once, to Australia from Sudan (where I was working)and had to travel via Cairo (to get a visa), then on to a three day stopover in Singapore, then on to Sydney. Then on the way back I flew from Sydney to Harare (Zimbabwe), travelled a bit in Zim and Botswana and then flew back to Sudan via Nairobi. That was a bit of a trip as well!

I reckon the furthest i went (in terms of distance from UK) was New Zealand once. I cant see it as a 2 week holiday destination. You've really got to go for a worthwhile amount of time for the flight cost to be worth it. I spent 2 months there and still felt that i hadn't done enough when i left, considering the flight cost. So i cant imagine it being a destination for a short holiday.

I'm heading off to Australia from Toronto 3 weeks from now - it's a 20 hour flight to Hong Kong and then 9 hours from there to Sydney. Thankfully I'll be staying there for more than a few weeks - sadly the paper back for Himalaya isn't out yet as that would make a fine travelling companion.
