1st trip to Europe by sminobe on 19 February 2005 2:17am

My daughter's 8th grade drama teacher is taking about 40 teens to London, Paris, Venice & Rome on a tour (4 cities in a whirlwind 10 days!). I get to "tag along". Sorta. Being a teen, my daughter doesn't want me along to embarrass her, so I'm planning a Shadow Tour -- I'm hoping to at least be in Europe at the same time & then to join her in Rome after her tour is over so we can do some more sightseeing.

I was thinking of Eurailing it. Any suggestions? We'll be starting in Rome on July 4 & need to end up in London by July 14.

Actually, since I'm not on the tour with the kids, I'll need something to do from June 25 (London) - July 4 (Rome). I'd love to tour the UK -- and maybe meet some of you folks!

I just found this interesting item online:

Hotel Fawlty Towers
Via Magenta 39
00185 Rome, Italy
Phone: +39064450374 / +39064454802
Fax: +390645435942
info@fawltytowers.org

Anybody ever stay here?!

I know some Germans who didn't particularly enjoy their stay. You might want to also try the Bates Hotel,Quirnal. Try it once and you'll never stay anywhere else.
'Whirlwind' is right. Speaking personally, if you didn't want to shadow your daughter too closely (although if you did, you could make her first trip to Europe really memorable), I'd recommend choosing just 2 of those cities and spending some more quality time in both of those. I hope both of you have a blast.

If you go to London, Iíd recommend a coach trip around the city with a guide who speaks your language (or are you American? - I don't know!) And if you do decide to visit more of the UK outside of London, then Iíd recommend going to the county of Hampshire in the south on the south cost where you can visit towns like Winchester (Englandís old capital city before London) and Salisbury, but the decision is yours!

I agree with Zak about going to Hampshire. It really is a lovely County.
In London you have the Big Bus Tours where you can hop on and off all day. They cover all of the tourist sites. You will be here just after the longest day so it will not get dark until almost 10pm,another bonus!

Good God! Someone else has actually heard of Hampshire! I thought us native Hampshire lot were forgotten by the rest of the world! LOL! Yes it is a mighty beautiful county we have, there's the South Downs, Portsmouth's historic ships, old Southampton, the New Forest, Winchester (thoroughly, thoroughly recommended), Danebury iron-age hill fort, and of course Jane Austen's house in the village of Chawton just outside my home town of Alton. GO HAMPSHIRE! *Wishes he was there instead of Leeds (Snowy Yorkshire)*

oh thomas you know how boring hampshire really is. if you are going to go there, don't go to alton! it's the most nothingness of nothingness, even worse than lincolnshire!

Thanks for the tips -- I'll try to find a tour guide who speaks, like, Californian!

I may also get a chance to visit Germany with a friend (luckily she is *totally* fluent in California-speak as well as, like, German).

Any tips on which guidebook is best for the Budget Traveler or those that have really good directions (e.g.: turn left out of the tube station...)? I just need UK & France:
Rough Guides
Lonely Planet
Rick Steves
Footprints
???

I'm hoping to get to Doune Castle (I've got my coconuts all ready to pack): http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/doune/dounecastle/

Just look at those huuuuuuuuuuuuge ... tracts of land!
