AL SHAMA REDISCOVERED! The Seventh Series by caribonum on 23 February 2005 4:12pm

I dunno, it’s a funny old thing age…

One minute you’re a youthful bright-eyed young ex-leper bouncing along a street in Tunisia apparently without a care in the world and the next you’re 63-year-old pensioner dragging your aching limbs through the Khyber Pass, grumbling incessantly about life and wondering if you’d remembered to pack the haemorrhoid cream.
Oh what to do old chap …now that time’s a catching you up at a furious rate?

A suggestion?

Dust of the cotton trousers, the Panama hat and the old bus pass ... Grab passepartout playfully by the collar and go forward with haemorrhoid cream in hand to.

…Wait for it …wait for it!!!

Make a seven part mini series revisiting the past travelogues.

Picture this,

A 50-minute program of ‘interesting bits’ covering the “Around the world in 80 days” series. Not unlike a tin of Campbell’s condensed tomato soup. All the goodness and mouth-watering flavour of tomatoes in a convenient, rather attractive pygmy sized tin. Well, sort of? With MP doing a relaxed location narrative from a few of his most memorable places, be it in Cairo city or Dubai port. Telling us about events not mentioned in the original series and changes since that time.

And so on and so forth for a five further programs covering the entire travel series.

But what of the seventh I hear you ask.

Well, how about a compilation of the out takes that must have adorned the cutting room floor. Things that went terribly wrong, the uncontrollable giggles, film that ran out, natives walking into the frame, more Bombay bum moments and not forgetting the warmth of humanity. There must be a few wheelie bins full of this stuff knocking around …somewhere?
As a finale, (and because it has been such a memorable experience for him) MP revisits Dubai port and re-acquaints himself with the remaining crew of the Al Shama before sailing off on it into the sunset.

So go on MP. Grab yer pensioners bus pass, raid the BBC coffers, get down to the 1st class lounge at Heathrow and fulfil your date with destiny, the Al Shama and a seventh series!

Go on treat your fans both old and new to a final reminder of your many adventures across our beautiful planet.

(It wouldn’t do too badly for a merchandise relaunch either eh? Nothing wrong with a bit of blatant, (but healthy) marketing you know ;o) …Looks down sheepishly, coughs nervously and drops a hernia.

BTW Does anyone from Palin Ltd read this crap anyhow? …Or anyone for that matter?

A DVD with the "Best of" bits and outtakes, etc. is not a bad idea. I'd buy it!

MP RETIRES !

It was bound to happen ...a destiny with the pipe and slippers!

Three cheers and a raised glass of palm wine for the world's silliest explorer.

Here's to you MP

ps
I still think a mini series would still be a nice little earner Mike?

Personally I'd love for MP to go back to Dubai and seek out the crew of the Al Shama. I know MP has already spoken about how nice it would be (DVD interview on Around the world in 80 days) to go back and see them all again, those who remain that is.

The episode on the Dhow has to be one of my favourite pieces of television ever and I'd like see MP reacquaint himself with the Al Shama crew as I'm sure would many others on this board.

As for a whole 7 part series, I somehow think that would be unlikely. I'm all for the out takes idea though and if possible some extended scenes from the original series.

:)
