80 days, pole to pole, full circle and sahara by merlwood on 7 October 2002 1:48am

Sahara has not been been on telly at the time of typing this message and so I cannot give an opinion about that series obviously. However I have to say frankly that the three other series are probably some of the best entertainment ever shown on television! I am a travel, lonely planet, D & K, world geography, meeting people of other cultures, airports, National Geographic etc etc obsessed individual and so obviously interested in what you have done. Don't let Sahara be your last adventure. Favourite journey, probably on the Dow. Include maybe Brazil in your next journey or the Karakoram Highway!

For me Around the World in 80 Days is the best series.

Maybe not the longest, or ambitious but the principle of the adventure of getting from A to B in a limited, albeit with a little time to see a few things, and a firm deadline was part of the charm.

The Dhow, the Pyramids, the Orient Express and collecting a few comedy items for a couple of pythons...

Full Circle was great, but the last third it seemed that the team were exhausted (mind you that was the case in 80 Days as well I think, but this was a shorter end third!)

What does everyone else think ?

If I had to choose a favourite, I would choose 'Pole to Pole'. Why? Good question. :-) I have never tried to analyse why it is my favourite. No, I'm going to be indecisive and say I like them all. :-)

I loved pole to pole, full circle and 80 days and i'm afraid sahara doesnt quite live up to these 3. Having watched all 4 episodes now, nothing sticks in my mind like the previous journeys. I cant help thinking that if this had been the first of the series, the rest may never have happened. Maybe Michael needs a fresh challenge away from travelling. Anyone agree / disagree ?

Thing is, what could he do that he hasn`t done already!

4 Hours around the earth - hey Michael do you fancy a trip into space?

I think it would be hard to beat 80 days the deadline along with the exotic locations and myriad of different types of travel.Full circle was excellent but I agree with a previous post where the last third was a little rushed as they were all probably exhausted.Pole to Pole was a little bit samey samey as a large proportion of it was Africa. I think unfortunately Sahara was a little forgettable but it has got to be difficult for him to come up with something new. Id like him to do all Europes capitals in a certain time scale I think that would give us lots of different cultures languages and quite distinct geography too. I think he lost alot of his sense of humour during sahara where as on the other trips he was always integrating with the locals and having a laugh.

I'd love to see Michael in space, but do you think they'd let him up there? Or does Michael even feel up for it?

That's not a bad idea rumblefish! I'd love to see European capitals or South American capitals. I don't quiet know much of them both but I think Michael wouldn't really like the european idea because it's so close to home.

True nottlob but at the same time i feel the end of such arduos trips such as full circle can be a little of an anti climax because of the fatique and natural homesickness anyway to be fair tunisia and the sahara are not that far away. so European capitals would give michael the chance to concentrate on an in depth look into each of the varied countries and their cultures and still be home in time for tea so as to speak. This post was from rumblefish but for some reason which I cant make out Ive changed into Heidi any ideas?
