How do you feel about eating foreign food in other countries. Any funny stories or disasters to do with food on your travels?

Well - I must say that the thought of the tinned chicken - with bone - turned my stomach and I thought MP brave to eat it!
We regularly visit Turkey - both off and on the main tourist areas - and try and eat as the Turks do if we can. I once overheard tourists saying that they'd found a great eatery where they had eaten every night. I strained my ears because I thought if it was that good we'd try it out. 'Yes' continued the tourist 'we had shepherd's pie every night'!! (there was no hint of irony in his voice either!!) What? You went to Turkey, 2nd only to France in cuisine, and had shepherd's pie every night?
The first year we went (1988) there were much fewer eateries - you couldn't get chips (hooray); no 'bisto gravy' - yes! Just a few sandwich-type bars which sold cheap food and have now been closed by the local council (not up to the standard they want this particular city to be).
Anyway back to the tale..it was one of our first nights and we went out for a meal. My husband ordered a mixed grill, and when it came, the lamb chop was rare (we like our meats cooked well!) so he sent it back. His plate duly arrived back, minus the chop! He then sent this back, to receive the plate back agaion, with a completely different chop, minus something else. I can't remember if this went on any longer, but suffice it to say we were not well pleased with the meal, but were also in fits!! They had also tried to cook chips, but because not many people had asked for it, the fat had been lying idle and was full of flies! When they served the chips (on a different plate thankfully) you actually got chip a la fly!! Needless to say we didn't go there again, and now I can recommend Turkish grub (not just touristy kebabs) to anyone!!!

Charming!
That's why you've got no friends and your husband turned gay!

Youre really harsh!!!!!!
In france they have those stew type things that come with cous-cous in pots. They have chicken bones and organs etc in! Its quite funny watching my little sister eating it!!!!
Chicken nuggets also have loads of crap in, like bones, beaks, brains feet, chemicals etc! ive got a campaign going to stop people at school eating the chicken burgers by telling them what's in them, but they don't listen! It's hopelesss! |

Harvey, don't mind George Dubya; he's just a troll and a nasty piece of work, often having a go at people on the site just for the spitefulness of it.
Ahren, when it comes down to it does it really matter whether you are eating the Chicken's legs or it's feet? In the end it's all chicken (apart from introduced chemicals and preservatives) and just a matter of personal taste.
I've eaten all sorts of stuff in my time, and goat kebab has been one of my more normal foreign meals. Try roast fruit bat, cane rat and giant Africa land snail as rather more odd additions to your menu one day! |

Speaking of goat meat, Mexico has a fine dish called cabrito which is something like steak. It's usually pretty spicy, but very tolerable. It's not as good as beef, though it's an interesting substitute. |

I have two Giant African Land Snails!! I could never eat them they are so cute!
Bats are meant to taste like chicken, but then again everything does! Although i also think bats are gorgeous, i wouldnt mind trying a bit! |

Years ago, I ate at the former summer home of the Duke of Windsor and his wife, in Nassau, Bahamas, which had been converted into a restaurant. Quite nice. What I remember most was the "medley of pates" (pottays, you know... liver). It consisted of liver from about 10 different exotic animals. Frankly, they all tasted somewhat the same and had to be washed down with copius amounts of wine to make it tolerable. But, it cured whatever iron deficiency I may have been suffering from. |
