Customs advice for Americans traveling abroad by Valarie on 11 April 2005 10:34pm
I've flown to and from London twice in the past 6 months. Returning from the first trip, I flew Continental from London - Houston. Returning from the second trip, I flew American from London - Dallas. In both cases, I had 100 mins to make my connecting flight to Portland. And in both cases, I was repeatedly reassured by both airlines that that was more than enough time to get through customs and make my connection. And in both cases, I only made my flights because I ran like crazy (and in the flight through Houston, they even closed the plane door behind me). So if you're planning an intl flight, make sure you allow at least 2.5 hours to get through customs.

Does anyone know why on earth you have to go through customs, then pick up your luggage, then drop it off about 50 feet later? This makes no sense to me. If I've booked my luggage all the way through, shouldn't the airline be taking care of this? And then why do I have to go back out to security again? I'd just gotten off a plane - when did I become unsecure again?

Well, the Houston airport is going through tremendous growth and changes right now. The City and the Airport Authority are doing they very best they can to make the transition as smooth as possible. Believe me, it's not for lack of concern. I hope your next visit will be more pleasant.

I think this is the same procedure for all international arrivals into the US. I think they don't trust the baggage checking in a foreign country so they do another check on your luggage for domestic flights.
