The Chatter Box : Blathering On
Calling Balint by peripatetically on 21 February 2003 2:09am
USA: Hello, Balint, in Budapest! Here I am. I'd love to hear more about you. Like I told you, I was in Budapest a couple times and also other regions of Hungary. I made a close friendship with a Hungarian family who lives in Vienna now. After speaking to him and expressing my desire to learn more about Hungary, he met me there one August to show it to me on my holiday several years ago. It was one of the most interesting and beautiful experiences ever. I am now 56. (Was 35 at the time, so it's been a while since I was there. Also, it was prior to the borders opening, so it was something quite extraordinary for someone from the WEST.)

Hi Patty!

Well, I guess it became less extraordinary to the western eye since the iron curtain has fallen as the McDonald's looks pretty much the same here as everywhere else on this earth. The places you mentioned you had visited are the most popular tourist attractions around Budapest hence tourcompanies haul busloads of tourists to tiny Szentendre which ruins the experience for everyone I suppose despite the unquestionable charm of the town. It must have been a whole different ballgame 30 years ago (even I wasn't around in those days) because there were much less stalls selling folksy stuff and you could actually see the place instead of the neverending line of vendors.
Wow, that was a bit gloomy!:) I don't wish to discourage anybody who's thinking about visiting Hungary because it's still a unique place in lots of ways I guess it's just the usual whining of a local who sees the place going into the wrong direction when nobody seem to have the power the take the wheel out of the hand of commercialism. I think it's the same with Michael when he expressed his worries about the modern world discovering the Dogon people.
I don't really know that to write about myself apart from what I've already written. My favorite activities are traveling and photography and writing of course. I've been to the US three times so far visiting your magical national parks and been to D.C. which is not far from you. What else? I bought a vineyard last fall on the Great Plain of Hungary so the first harvest will be in late September. My only trouble is that I don't drink alcohol and don't like wine but I love the spirit of harvest and that's what I'm looking forward to. I just don't have any idea what I'm going to do with more than 20.000 gallons of wine...:)
Feel free to ask anything you wish I'll be happy to answer.
