i was volunteering in madurai last year. if you have 6 weeks to spare i'd reccommend pondicherry on the east coast (a bit out of the way i know!). try to visit kerala if you can (the most beautiful place i've been to). i don't really know much about the west coast i'm afraid. happy travels!

who are you volunteering with?

Cheers for the info so far, Pondicherry does look like it's worth a visit.

How was Madurai Sir Robin? We're working with an org called Cedar who work a umber of smaller NGOs and community groups.

How did u guys find the costs in South India? is it as cheap as you guys expected?

Madurai was fantastic thankyou! The Shri Minakshi Temple is absolutely fantastic- you'll burn your feet on the outside concrete if it's hot and sunny though! I had weekends free so went away for a lot of them (there wasn't an awful lot to do in madurai). However, there is an individual charm and warmth about Madurai and I found myself quite attatched to the place and the Tamil people after a while.

And yes it is cheap but don't let people rip you off. Try to live like a local and spend in that manner as much as you can. You'll find yourelf thinking "20 rupees for that?!!!" before getting home to remember it's 5 times the price elsewhere!

Yes, Pondicherry.

There's a temple town just South of Madras named Mahabilipuram that was one of the highlights of India for me. Lots of stone carvings, both statues and a huge one in a cliff.

Methinks Kerala has the finest weed on Earth.

On the west coast there are very many places: In Karnataka I suggest you visit Udupi and it's ancient temple; Mysore is a very healthy hill city, and some crickets' plays worth seeing, beside Kali temple up the hill, or the Great past Maharaja palace; Mangalur, by the sea, is also an interesting small city, with some amazing tumbs of the Nath sect in their Math over there: their guide is a Psychiatrist (not sure if he has the license though, or if he is registered) with Jade earrings!
Up the coast you'll see the Holy place of Gokarna, by the Sea as well, crowded with Sadhus, and with a very special Shiva's temple; near Bombay you shouldn't miss Ganeshpuri, a ancient and holy center with Nityananda's, the naked Saint, last Ashrama. Of this Grat Man you'll find many traces in Kerala too, expecially the Northern part: he walked all this coast up to Ganeshpuri where he died in the 1969, if I recall correctly. Kerala is a beautiful place: nice beaches in Kovalam, and surely you should try to reach and visit Kanyakumari's small island, the Southest tip of India, where you'll visit the amazing shrine of Swami Vivekananda...
All this informations, and maybe you've just come back!

Sorry - no. I have been to Southern India (Trivandrum) but not Kerala.

Am hoping to go back one day and take in Kerala.
