What should I read ? by jamie84 on 11 October 2005 6:28pm
Hi there,

After seeing michaels enthusiasm for reading, I defenitely want to take it up. I was just wondering if anyone could give me some tips on which books would be ideal to start with ? I am 21 and I am pretty open to different topics and types of books etc thanks

"Captain Correlli's Mandolin" and "To Kill A Mockingbird" are both fantastic, as is "Birdsong" by Sebastian Faulks

If you're in for some travel-stuff, read any of Bill Bryson's book.
I know he's an american (poor guy), but he still writes very funny travel-stories.
After all, he has lived in the UK for a very long time.

Why not start with MPs own list of readings? Click on the "Bibliography" link over there to the left.

Also, librarian Nancy Pearl published a couple of books of recommended readings called "Book Lust" & "More Book Lust".

I second "To Kill a Mockingbird". We had to read this in high school English classes. I hated reading books in high school English classes, but this was one I really got into.

I assume you've read all of MPs travelogues already...

Well shucks, Jamie. Decide what you enjoy the most. I can't suggest anything. Too many books I enjoy, covering many subjects.

Franklin, Whaddya mean he's an American, poor guy Just cause we have certain issues...:-)

Jamie, Mike is absolutely right. It's not up to us to tell you what to read. It's up to you to discover and explore. If you don't want to spend too much go to your local charity shops and pick up a few books on the cheap. Then if you don't like them you haven't wasted much money.
What I would recommend you might hate so it really is up to you to find out what you will like.

I completely agree with Ahren, they are all brilliant books. If you want some that a really quick and easy to get stuck into any of the 'Number one lady detective agency' books by Alexander Mcall-Smith are brilliant. They also give you a taste of what life is like in Botswana.
