My friend's son who worked with the lions in the Serengeti for 2 years gave up taking larium as it gave him nightmares and made him anxious. He took other supposedly less effective medication and made sure he was covered up and slept under mosquito nets as did the native peoples of that area. He avoided malaria and is now working here for the WWF. Hope this of some small help. Linz

I have taken Malarone several times, it was avalable on private prescription only.

It was fine, although combined with altitude and too much beer it can cause one to spend rather too long on the throne!

JF, do you mean like Queen Elizabeth?

Stick with Malaron! I use it now whenever I go in to a malarial zone although it is expensive...£3 a tablet from UK pharmacies but I guess if that stops you getting malaria it is worth it. I used to get malaria a lot in the past but don't any more and for that I am grateful as it is truly horrible, not to say potentially deadly.

For long periods of time - Doxycycline! Very cheap. Granted you do have to take it for ages and it is an antibiotic so who knows what little things are getting immuned to it inside of you. (It is also perscribed for a whole host of other things including stomach upsets - so it might also kill off all the nasties in that very cheap goat curry you might have eaten!). Do take it with food and/or lots of water though coz it can get a bit stuck in your throat. But otherwise it's great!

Me and my wife have both been taking larium for South America and have been absolutely fine. It seems to vary greatly from person to person.
