Hey Mike, if you remove the h and r in your surname, your name will be Michael Caton like the Australian actor in The Castle. Nice one, eh? :o) |

Did you know Mike, that it was not Churchill who made that radio speech? It was an actor whose name escapes me. Linz |

Really Linz? Was it the man used as the double for Churchill for security reasons during the war.
I've been to the Cabinet War Rooms. I would go again. That is an unforgettable experience.

Churchill's double who made the speech? Now, I can believe that, but are you also saying he didn't write the speech, either? He was somewhere beyond brilliant.
From your perspective, Churchill may have sounded like an ordinary Brit. But to us, he was almost the voice of God. |

I'm not sure who wrote the speech but the orater on the radio was definitely not Winston. I'll see if I can find anything on the web.
He was, undoubtedly, a great war leader but pretty poor in peacetime. There was this one incident which my granfather told me about. A rich seam had been found but to reach it safely entailed tunelling and drilling beneath a large manor house. The owner kicked up a fuss and refused permission (presumably he believed ownership extends down to the mantle)so the miners were told that they would tunnel around the problem which was much more dangerous. The miners refused to do that on the safety issues and there was a stalemate. Chuchill sent troops in to fire over the heads of the miners! My grandfather, who had fought in WW1, never forgave him. I have found out that the actor was Norman Shelley but this is denied by the Churchill Centre. However, Shelley's son recently uncovered an old 78rpm record that clearly proves it was Shelley. Churchill certainly wrote the wonderful speech. http://www.fpp.co.uk/bookchapters/WSC/Observer291000.html Linz |
