venice by Napoleon on 16 February 2006 7:09pm

Just got back from venice, second time ive been, last time was about six years ago. Probably one of the few truly unique places on earth. Didnt fully appreciate it last time. Travelled a bit more since then so really made the most of it. Went up the campanile, amazing views, got a day ticket for the waterbuses and went up and down the canal, went to lido, and on valentines day went to an opera recital in a baroque church which was brilliant. The people were friendly the restaraunts reasonable and the hotel fantastic. Had to get a belini in Harrys bar, this of course was not cheap, fourteen euros plus service, but it has to be done.
less croweded in the winter but still as breathtaking.

I loved Venice but I only spent a day there. Next time I would like to spend more time there and have a ride in a gondola!

I once had a free week that I planned to spend travelling around Italy but I got to Venice and never left. Great city! (I still haven't seen Florence or Rome - must rectify that situation...)

Venice proved one of the two surprise places I've visited.

Three years ago, I took a tour of a few Italian cities--Rome, Florence and Venice with Pisa, Padua and Verona along the way. Before I left, I figured Rome would be my favorite, followed by Florence and ... I guessed Venice would be okay.

Well, Venice took me totally by storm. Everywhere I turned I saw something that dropped my jaw, and St. Mark's had me in tears. I went through the basilica three times in one afternoon and still didn't feel like I'd really been able to absorb it!

The only complaint I had was the weather. I was there in early November, and it was COLD.

I would say Rome is still my favourite probably down to the shear size of it, and it numerous sights. But Venice is the one place that is quite simply odd.
Walking through the streets at night theres almost complete silence. No traffic. And travelling down the grand canal at night is definitely strange.
Its like your all waiting for the last bus home after a night out but the only difference is its a boat and the high street is flooded. Unforgettable
