Foot Washing when entering Argentina by cjcottam on 9 March 2006 4:24am

Hi,

Went to Iguacu Falls today and got a day visa into Argentina from Brazil. Rather strangely they made our group get out of the minivan and wipe our feet on a mat before we were allowed to enter the country. Anyone know what this is about? An old custom or some sort of disinfection? Foot and Mouth disease was mentioned in our group.

Any light anyone can shed on this would be greatly appreciated.

Disinfection. I seem to recall during the height of the foot & mouth scare in Britain, travellers coming into Australia had to go through the same process.

International passengers are sprayed with a sort of pesticide before they are allowed to disembark in Australia....this process upsets quite a few people as there is no pre warning given...the cabin crew just appear in masks weilding spray bottles!
