Russia travel compaign :c) by khumbuboy on 12 April 2006 9:12pm

I'd just like to say from an unbiased point of view (despite being recently married to a beautiful Russian girl) that Russia seems less of an ideal tourist destination and is highly under-rated.

I think to most, Russia seems like the almost impossible country to visit when in reality, it's actually quite easy. Although my Wife did work with a Russian tourist company and guided groups from Australia, Japan right through to the US, it feels as though in general that Russia wouldn't be the first on someone's travel itinerary.

What's everyone's idea of Russia and who has actually been to Russia. I would love to hear your opinions and experiences. Thanks!!

I've never been to Russia, but it's a country I would like to visit one day. I've seen pictures of Lake Baikal, near Irkutsk in Siberia, and that place looks absolutely stunning! Moscow and St Petersburg are also on my must-see list!

Well you asked.

My mothers parents were born in the Russian Empire. My grandmother in Minsk, my grandfather near Kiev. For grandpa, it was a place to be from. He left in 1911 and never looked back. Grandma was a member of Young Pioneers. (Under Lenin, you had to be). She left because her father had come to the United States and he sent for her. She was not amused.

Because of my fathers friends and Polish colleagues I grew up with a view of Russia (also being Jewish), besides being Communists, they were all rabidly Anti-Semitic and why would I want to go there? When I visited Poland, my fathers friends had me nervous every time I looked East. Rationally, I know this is insane, but this is what I grew up with. I wanted to ride the Trans Siberian Express. My fathers friend Piotr looked at me crosseyed and said, "watch Dr. Zhivago until you get sick of it and that will cure you."
So yes, I am not sure if I would ever go. Russia doesn't occur to me.
