It's Greek to Me! by pandab on 20 April 2006 1:57am

Help! I'm going to Greece on vacation later this year, and I'm trying to find a GOOD book to help me learn some of the language. Any suggestions?

Most of the ones I've seen so far have the words in the Greek alphabet (which is incomprehensible to me <G>) and some difficult phonetic spellings in the Roman alphabet. I'm NOT strong on linguistic skills, so I need something easy to follow. There don't seem to be many choices for Greek, either.

I swear, learning Japanese was easier than Greek <G>!

Thanks!

I'll set you up with my friend Liz. She is going to Greece this summer with her family. When you are there, contact Yvette Jarvis. She is an Athens City Councilwoman who grew up near me in Brooklyn. (I don't KNOW her. I went on a couple of student things she was involved with, but we went to different high schools, so dropping my name would not help LOL)! I only know what became of her, because of a newspaper article I read in a New York paper I found by accident.
Yvettes website.

Otherwise, it is Greek to me as well...

An English to Greek book might help.

I have a great little Greek phrase book, bought in Woolworths, Paphos with English to Greek and Greek to English with pronunciations for both languages. If I can find it I'll add details later.
I also found that having done physics at school helped with understanding the letters in the language. After a lengthy search through internet bookshops I can't find my book listed in any of the greek phrasebook locations.
