Doing Something Charitable to Have a Get Together. by tucsonmike on 25 April 2006 5:15am

Hi guys,
The following is the response I received from Daily Star Columnist Bonnie Henry.

Mike, the two things these teen-agers did were to hook up with a non-profit, this one being one that helps homeless teens, and to hook up with a local radio station that actually got Ashlee Simpson to come to town. That's what I would suggest for you: hook up with a well-regarded non-profit to give your cause legitimacy, and then turn to the local radio stations to bring your desired music star to town. Hope that helps.

Bonnie Henry

What it taught me was yes with the Branson letter, we put the cart before the horse. We are better off going with the charity first, THEN doing the other stuff.

Since Wild already has the Charity, my vote is to go with his. What say the rest of you?

LOL! I have to chuckle. A pie fight? Do you know how many complaints there will be about us wasting food? Especially if it is a group where helping people have more food is the goal.

So I am not sure if it will be pie in the sky and in my eye.

Brilliant! May I suggest that we look at the type of charity that Michael already has interests in so that we can decide on one that is:-
1. Underepresented
2. One that would Interest Michael enough to participate.
3. As politicless as possible to avoid the inevitable time consumng discussions that would ensue.

I am a broken record I swear it. Suggest you go to here and then use that to influence your decision
http://www.farmafrica.org.uk/how.cfm

This is a charity that Michael has a direct interest in. See the folowing:

Otherwise this is a democratic forum and it is up to all of you

I think FarmAfrica is a great choice for an organization for us to support. To maximize our efforts, we need to focus on one group and this is, IMO, the most compelling one that has been suggested. How do we decide this? Take a poll? Set up a vote?

With whatever organization we eventually choose, we will need to come up with an original, thought and enthusiasm-provoking idea (which is also potentially lucrative) to organize ourselves around and then approach the organization to see if they are interested.

(Getting ahead of myself now, if we decide on FarmAfrica, Wild, you're the person most familar with them - Got any good ideas for a direction for us to proceed in?)

There's an incredible amount of creativity in this group - let's come up with SOMETHING WONDERFUL!

Geraldine

P.S. Last night, I finally got to see "Darwin's Nightmare", an amazing, incredibly multi-layered documentary on the the implications arising from the introduction of Nile Perch into Lake Victoria and the horrible consequences on the population of Tanzania. It's on the Sundance Channel right now. It's very hard to watch but it is an extremely important film. It lost out in the Oscars to the feelgood penguin film - sic transit Hollywood - but, at least, it got an Oscar nod so many, many more people like me will understand much more about what the people there are living (and dying) with. Find it! Watch it!

I, too, think that Farm Africa is a good one for us to support. I have just been looking up on the internet ideas for raising money for charity but not coming up with anything. It would be nice if it had a travel theme, I don't know what though.

Great Race!

Jaime, that was funny. I love the movie the Great Race. Wild, don't worry about sounding like a broken record. It just took the rest of us longer to come around.

Bathsheba, hello eh? Sounds like my silly story with the Canadian hockey player being interviewed (sorry Jaime). Ya know John, we were checkin' 'em real good in the corners ya know, eh? Our goalie, Jean-Pierre made some tough saves in the crease, ya know, eh? Enough, I am being silly.

Why don't we do this? Linz, why don't you look over the charities Mr. P is involved with and see what is "underepresented" but we keep Farm Africa on the table as the leading one. As for the around the world trip, well at the rate I am going, I may have to travel to Kazakhstan one of these days. So that can act as a halfway point.
Oh, yes, the thinking caps are back on. I love it!
