  The Chatter Box : Travel
Canada by Phil Evans on 5 June 2006 9:55pm
Hey, this is my first post here.

In 2 weeks time I'm embarking on a cross-Canada trip from Vancouver to New York. My intinerary is available on my blog: http://vancouver-to-ny.blogspot.com/ Just wondered if any of you had any tips of places I should check out along my way. Also, please feel free to check out my blog while I'm away!

I can help you with Montreal Toronto and New York. What do you like to do. What would you like to know?

Hi Phil! Greetings from the USA, Maryland, to be exact!

Hey Patty and Mike!

Well, I enjoy live music of many types (except rap, hehe).

I enjoy Science and History, theatre and non-mainstream films.

How's that to start?
Re: Canada by tucsonmike on 6 June 2006 5:20am
That's a good start Phil. To me, the best thing about Toronto is its many multi ethnic restaurants. If you like Science, it also has the Ontario Science Centre. Montreal has great club life and you can probably find all sorts of unique things in the student area along St. Denis.

New York is where I grew up. You have
The Museum of Natural History.
Queens Science Center.
Theater in New York is also abundant from Broadway to little neighborhood shows. Check

That will tell you a lot about the music scene in New York.

Non Mainstream films. The Angelika on Houston Street and the 8th Street Playhouse on 8th Street. (Both theaters are within walking distance of each other).
There is the Museum of the City of New York at 103rd Street and Fifth Avenue, a Broadcasting Museum in Midtown. I am only scratching the surface here. If there is anything more specific, let me know.

Have you figured out where you are staying?
Most of what you will be interested in is in Manhattan.

A few years ago before we did our first holiday to Canada I considered travelling from Toronto to Vancouver overland via Moose Jaw and some other wonderfully named places. We decided in the end that that journey would have taken too much time out of our holiday and we would have had little time for visiting our relatives around Vancouver. We did go to Calgary from Vancouver by Greyhound bus and that was the best bus journey we had ever been on, travelling through the Rocky mountains via Kamloops, which was one of the break points, to arrive in Calgary late on a beautiful evening.

You're right about the great place names in BC and Alberta, Ken. My uncle lived in Moose Jaw and my grandmother taught in Medicine Hat and Medicine Bow. And I concur with you that a trip through the Canadian Rockies is not to be missed. I've done it by plane, train and automobile and each journey had its special joys.

The train journey used to be the best way to go but service has been curtailed in the last couple of decades. Has anyone here done the Vancouver/Calgary trip by rail in the last few years? I'd like to hear about your experiences.

And, if you're going to Calgary, try to arrive at Stampede time. It's the greatest rodeo in the world.

And Vancouver, of course... IMO, the most beautiful city in the world.

Gee, I've gotta pack my bags and get back there - it's been too long....

I heard that the Hoh Rain Forest in Northern Washington is great, not far from Vancouver. I will be in Vancouver/Seattle/Victoria (mostly backpacking Vancouver island and hiking in the Hoh) from June 11-25, I think we will drive into Vancouver a few days earlier than you, so if I see anything interesting I will post it here (assuming I can find an internet connection)

Hi Phil,

I notice you're going past Banff. I would recommend hiring a car and visiting some of the sites along the icefields parkway - Lake Louise and the nearby Lake Moraine are stunning. A little further up you'll find the Athabasca glacier which is good fun to visit. Further up you'll find the Edith Cavell glacier and the lovely town of Jasper.

If you'd like to read about them then you can look through my diaries (September-October 05) and photos at:

Tofino, BC is a must see place! But, since you have already left the West, try NS's Cape Breton Island, and St. John, Newfoundland has a GREAT music festival (The George Street Festival) in early August. You must kiss the cod and drink Screech in Newfoundland.
