Michael is firmly against the idea of a convention - official quote ....... by Diamond on 12 March 2003 9:46pm

The following is a direct quote from the letter I recieved today ( from Mayday mangement) in response to my request for help with a UK palinite convention, I wrote on your behalf.

"I was aware that you had put forward the idea of a convention some months back, and when you raised it again recently I let Michael know that this question would probably be asked at some point.

He is firmly against the idea. Over the past 35 or so years Michael has never wanted to go down the 'personality cult' road. Of course he's delighted that the website has attracted such a good bunch of people, who enjoy his travel programmes and books. It's great if some who haven't thought of travelling before may feel encouraged to discover more about other countries and cultures, and maybe decide to travel themselves. The website is about travel, and not about him,"

so there you have the answer in a nutshell!

Could someone please explain why this site is www.PALINStravels.co.uk rather than www.travels.co.uk if the site is nothing to do with michael!?

One very connfused 'lyn' proud to be a palinite - who will endeavour to make certain we meet up before future book signings and will be proud to wear the Palinites United t shirt - we will get them at least - they wont be official though!

Peace and Palinites

Many thanks for taking the time to do this Lyn, I'm a little surprised and saddened that Michael wouldn't want to spend some time with his band of fans. Of course you have to respect the man's wishes, he's obviously very busy at present but I hoped he would have been happy to meet us at least for a couple of hours once a year, but never mind. He might even have enjoyed it!!

I don't think the majority of us have the time nor the means to travel beyond the family holiday and enjoy Michael's journeys more for the way he interacts with the people and situations he encounters than the different places visited (although these are fantastic too). It's obvious from looking at the many posts made on this site, we are Palinites before travellers and it's a little shortsighted to think otherwise. If the site was truly to be about the journeys, the Chatter Box facility shouldn't really exist on here, it should be a separate site.

However, if it wasn't for the site none of us would have met and interacted (oo-er) and I hope we can still meet at some time in the future. We must now resign ourselves to the fact that we can only meet Michael at future booksignings and be grateful for that.

Rich (disappointed but still a Palinite)

I was going to post a previous message from the Webmaster on the subject of what we post in Blathering On, when it is not about Michael's travels. However, it seems to have gone missing from the "Is Michael a little disappointed?" thread. I asked the question a few months back when I had doubts as to what we were allowed to post in Blathering On and the Webmaster reassured us that Michael was happy with our ramblings. It looks as if some of us need that reassurance again.

This is my opinion; I think Michael would be happy that people from all over the world are gathering here and getting to know each other. As we get to know each other, we learn about each otherís countries. We develop friendships, we discuss all kinds of things and isnít that what Michael thinks is the way to understanding other cultures, by talking to each other?

I have learned so much more about different countries from the Net, I would not learn from books or from most TV programmes. It is the personal touch I like and hearing about how others live their lives and finding out how much we all really have in common. We are all so different, yet we are all so alike.

I know you are disappointed Michael is not interested in coming to a convention, but donít let that stop you from getting together and meeting face to face at last. Also donít let the disappointment ruin your enjoyment of Palinís Travels and put doubts in your head.

when michael has enjoyed publicity and profit as a a python and now successfully re invented himself - I think it wrong of him to bite the hand that feeds him - without us this web site would not exist - neither would Michael Palin - Michael cannot buy every book and video he has written and profited from - that was left up to us -

but I agree that something positive should come out of something so negative but there is a part of me that says

You cant have your cake and eat it Michael!! we havent let you down we have always been there for you - on an informal basis - I never thought of Michael as a cult personality - I personally have many other special people in my life !!!

Wonder what would happen if Michael invited us to a book signing and we said no thank you!!

wonder if MP ever bothered to read the threads I printed off the chatterbox! very much doubt it now! sorry folks - I did try. Michael doesnt mind us reading and buying his books though - think about it Michael - this does not sound like you at all.

Peace and t shirts

Lyn

it really isnt very nice of michael to refuse an invtiation in such a way!!

um, I'm sorry I agree with Michael. We dont own the rights to him, he is entitled to turn down any invitations. To be honest, I myself would be uncomfortable at a convention if Michael was there just to be gracious.

Without Michael this website would not exist.

I won't say anymore on this subject, because we have been down this road before and I have put my opinion across about it in a previous thread.

without us and many others supporting michael he would not have the funds to put the web site on the internet!!
