Colin, Wow!

I've been to Krakow and to Warsaw. Some folks here have heard me speak of my surrogate uncles, especially my fathers friend in Krakow, Prof. Piotr Tomasik. I enjoyed the pictures of Rynek Glowny.

Auschwitx was some experience. The day we were there was cloudy drizzly and tense. Most of the other tourists were Israeli schoolkids with guides and either Mossad or Shin Bet agents. You could not get too close to them.

Piotr dropped us off at the camp (we were taking the train to Bratislava afterwards). He cannot go into the camp himself. It is haunted for him. I have known him for over 30 years. I learned that weekend, he had spent seven years from ages 10-17 living in the town of Auschwitx (Oswiecim in Polish). His father was also a chemist. When World War II ended, the Tomasik's were moved there so Piotr's father could run the I.G. Farben plant, now under Polish juristiction. Piotr had a university internship with three friends. He took them through the camp. In one of the barracks where they had pictures of prisoners one of Piotr's friends found a photograph of his father. The father had been a Polish army officer arrested by the Germans. So for Piotr, the place his haunted.

His personal tour of Wavel Castle was funny though. Piotr is a big bluff man with a way of carrying himself. He looks a little like Gorbachev. The tour guide tried to stop us he barked at her and she let us aside. He told me he told her, "these young people are Americans and do not speak much Polish."

Krakow is an amazing city. Thanx Colin!
