Vietnam and the Phillipines by philosophizer on 27 July 2006 3:02pm

Hi,

I'm just looking into travelling the Vietnam or the Phillipines in a couple of months, and was wondering if anyone has been to either of these places before, and if so, how safe are they for solo travellers, and are the people welcoming and friendly?

I've heard you can easily stay out there for $300-$400 per month, is this correct?

IF so, for this price, what type of accommodation can I expect?

Finally, what would you advise visiting whilst there. I would like to travel most of the country which I am staying in, so tips would be great.

Thanks.

Hi philosophizer,
I was in Vietnam last year. Expect to pay $8-20 USD per night for accomodation. Is safe enough, usual tourist scams at some places i.e. the xeom (motorbike taxi drivers). I would recomend it to any one. Avoid Southern Philipines around the Sulu sea at the moment, alot of military action in there area.

Thanks Dominic. I've decided I'm going to fly to Hong Kong, travel South through Vietnam, into Cambodia, then Thailand, and fly home from Bangkok.

I'm planning on taking £800 with me for six to eight weeks.

My main concern is that I look young for my age (18). Will this cause a safety problem as I will be travelling solo?

Thanks.
