Travelling to South America and Peru by Leonk on 3 August 2006 10:24pm

Hello folks,

I'm getting ready for a 4-month long trip around South America. I'll be going to Chile, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru and Argentina.

Firstly, does anyone have any good advice/recommendations from experience?

Secondly, I have been watching Palin's Full Circle and particuarly his trip to Peru where he visits the Pongo De Mainique. It looks absolutley amazing, and I feel I have to get myself there.

I have searched across the internet for a tour guide who do this trip. Have found a few but none have responded to my emails (perhaps I should write in Spanish).

Has anyone visited the Pongo De Mainique, and can recommend a guide who will take me there?

Thanks

I'm sure you'll find a lot of good advice from other people, but I'll start with the important things in life.

Arequipa in Peru has the best chocolate I have ever tasted (and believe me I've researched the theme). Go there, eat some, then eat some more.

My trip to several Andean countries was in 1997, so much of what I'd say would probably be way out of date. You're going to be in for a treat though (positive one).

I go to Argentina quite a lot and I'm hoping to be there for at least 3 months myself from mid October. It's a very interesting country and hasn't been explored enough or written about enough - it's a very young country that the rest of the world is only starting to notice. My best advice for you about Argentina is to read 'Culture Shock - Argentina' by Fiona Adams before you go - unlike regular travel books this one is mainly about the Argentinean people, their customs and their personalities. It's quite funny and I found it very helpful on my first visit two years ago!

If you like the mysterious and the ancient, as I do, make sure you visit Tiawanaku, Isla Del Sol (Lake Titicaca), Cuzco, Nazca and the Inca Trail to Machu-Picchu....indulge in an Ayahausca Ceremony in the Amazon, via Iquitos.
