The Chatter Box : Blathering On
Famous book by Holle on 16 August 2006 6:25pm
Well my dear friends, I was a little bit quiet for a while, just bussy with the job, but I managed to pop in now and then and followed your discussions nevertheless. For not coming back with empty hands I thought a good book may be a nice idea. And so here it is:

It's a very famous mining book published first in 1556 in Latin. This one is the German version from 1557. Don't worry if you can't read it. The used language is quite old-fashioned and it is really hard to understand what he means even if you can read the words. Just enjoy the great illustrations, which shows the working conditions of this time in very rich details.

Fascinating illustrations, Holle! Thanks. I wish I could read the text. Any info on the artist?

(For anyone who's interested - make sure you get deep into the book where the color illustrations start. Scroll down through the pages on the left-hand side of the screen.)

Remarkable engineering text, Holle. I'm glad you are being taught the most modern technology!

Seriously, this book looks like an amazing production for its day. The writing alone is quite a feat, the illustrations a marvel. The printing, the distrubution brings questions to my mind. Have you seen this book? I imagine it is a museum piece.

Welcome back, Holger. That's a beautiful book. I like that the detailed pictures are tinted.

I'm glad you like the book. Personally I have only seen reprints with black and white illustrations, the coloured version is very rare. The illustrations are made by Basilius Weffering, the woodcuttings in preparation of the print are made by Rudolf Manuel Deutsch. For more background information of the author have a look here:

In 1912 an American mining engineer called Herbert Clark Hoover published an English version of it. Must have been a bestseller, later he became president of the United States ;-).
