Egypt by juniorff on 17 August 2006 2:14pm
Planning to go and stay in Luxor in November, but would like to pop up to Cairo and see some pyramids and the big museum! Looking at going up on the night train and also return via the same route.

Just looking for any information anyone has on this matter, either travel or sights to see for the day in Cairo?

Happy travels!

Just came back from three and a half weeks in Egypt. You can see my photography at http://www.mysticegypt.blogspot.com/.

When you are in Cairo, I recommend that you visit the various pyramidal sites in chronological order, so you can see the evolution of the builders' skill. Start in Saqqara and see the oldest standing stone structure in the world, Zoser's Step Pyramid. The go to Dashur and visit the Bent Pyramid, which strangely changes angle halfway up. Nearby, is the world's first true pyramid, the Red Pyramid, which you can go inside (and enjoy the smell of bat urine!). You should then go on to the marvellously grand Pyramids of Giza - an aesthetic joy only matched by Angkor Wat. Breathtaking!

I visited the Egyptian Museum three times, as it is overwhelming. I also recommend that you take with you a copy of the excellent British Museum Dictionary Of Ancient Egypt, as this was an insightful and indispensable companion everywhere I went, especially at the museum. You can get details for the book at http://www.tibetkanagawa.blogspot.com/.

Of course, if you require a break from Pharoanic Egypt, then it is a must that you visit Coptic Cairo and Islamic Cairo (although, all of Cairo is Islamic).

I hope that helps.

Happy Travels,

The Mystic Traveller

went there july last year, boy was it hot,
arrived in Cairo, flew in over the pyramids seeing them first like that was unreal..
Cairo, the museum, like no other, the pyramids and the sphinx, it was hard to believe we were actually there looking at them, you see them in books and on tv so much that when you are there and you can physically touch them.. its mad..

coptic churches in Cairo are good to see as was the big bazar, we got a taxi across town to the bazar, being in amongst the traffic of cairo and seeing the different streets and everyday life was good..form there went to sinai and climbed mt sinai, if you ever get the chance do it, sunrise on top of mt sinai well worth the climb
from here we finisehed in luxor, go to karnak in the morning if you can, it is very quiet as all the tour buses go to the valley of the kings in the morning, you will have karnak to yourself and you can loose yourself in it and really take it all in.
luxor temple is good but after karnak its hard to top it...
we got the night train to cairo from luxor, an experience, cant remember the price but it was cheap, i still have the ticket somewhere.. you have your own room in the carriage, fold down bunk beds and a "butler" to serve you "dinner" and "breakfast". its basic, its not like what you see in the movies, but we had a good time and were glad we did it, in the morning you get to see a bit of the countryside as you trundle up towards cairo..
I think i have a few photos of the train somewhere, i definitely have some video of it that i will stick up on google video as soon as i can...

hope it helps
wish i was going back, next time we will do cairo and aswan....

have a few photos here.

Thanks for that it is all really useful and you have just confirmed what we want to do! Could you give us a bit more information on the night train? How and where did you book it? Thanks for your help!

Re: Egypt by onaught on 24 August 2006 1:55pm

things a bit mad for me at the moment
i will gather what i have over the weekend and i will get back to you

in the mean time try out this site
this train looks alot better then the one we went on, i would say we were on the state railway..
how long are you going for, it might be a case of having to go into the station when your there and booking it there and then...

we dealt with a travel agency located in cairo,
they booked our internal flight, two spare seats on a charter flight from sharm el sheik to luxor and our train ticket...

anyway give me the weekend and i will dig out all the info i have

Re: Egypt by ollien90 on 24 August 2006 3:41pm
this was the cost of the sleeper train found it on an old email

- Sleeper Train

2 Per Person in Double Cabin 55 U$D x 02 Guests = 110.00 .- U$D

so it might have been the one from the website above..

I backpacked around Egypt last June... started in Cairo, went all the way south and back to Cairo via the Red Sea.

We took the overnight train south all the way to Aswan - quite a chilled out town plus the gateway to see the temple of Ramses II in Abu Simbel and also Philae. We simply went to the station in Cairo and booked the tickets - they were quite cheap and you get an coupla bunk beds, aircon plus food. The train stops in Luxor about 5am if I remember correctly.

Cairo is wicked! The pyramids are a must see and the step mastaba in Saqqara is also worth checking out. Apart from that, there's the citadel, the Khan-al-Khalili bazaar, Al-Azhar mosque and the museum (warning, doing it in one go is very draining as it's rather cluttered!).

If you're a seafood fan, a trip up to Alexandria is a must!

Hope this helps... and my travel pics are on

Safe travels
