The Chatter Box : Blathering On
Miner's greetings by Holle on 17 August 2006 4:50pm
Yesterday in the chatroom we dicussed a question but we weren't able to find a reasonable answer. So I want to ask it here once more, may be someone can help.

Does anyone know how miners greet each other in your country?

Background: Here in Germany miners ususally are very proud of their profession and keep up the traditions even if the mining in a region died ages ago. One of these trations is their greeting, they say 'Glück auf!' to each other. Its origin goes back in the 15th century and means the luck may open up in form of a rich silver ore vein. Of course a simple translation of this phrase would create nonsense. But may be other mining areas have their own greetings too, rooting in their history. Or may be emigrants have spread and modified it. Or may be they say simply 'Hello' and don't care about tradition ... So how do I greet miners from your country correctly???
