Medical Elective in Cambodia by EmilyChung on 22 August 2006 11:34am
Hi all, my first post. I'm due to go to Cambodia (not that I've booked anything, bar my actual placement) in February for at least six weeks for my medical elective. Having not been there before, just wondered if anyone had any tips. I'll be on a tight budget and looking for decent guesthouses etc at the moment, going to be mainly based in Phnom Penh...
Thanks x

You are going at a good time now, politically speaking. I have been three times to Cambodia. The first time was just after it reopened up to the outside world. At that time, it was quite an adventure and intense at times. Now, it is nothing but a pleasure to spend time there. The young Cambodians are a vibrant lot desperate to bring closure to the past. I cannot express how much I love that country and wish them a bright future.

You must, of course, visit Angkor - which is one of the most astounding, grand and beautiful places on Earth. I am addicted to it and will continue to visit in the future.

I have some photography at www.mysticcambodia.blogspot.com that may get you in the mood.

I wish you good luck and happiness on your journey. Please keep us updated.

Best wishes,

The Mystic Traveller

We stayed at the Imperial Garden which had a guesthouse section, but also had apartments to rent for long-stays.

It was conveniently situated at the south end of Sisowath Quay.

There are of course plenty of budget accomodation to choose from also, especially in the Boeng Kak area, the backpackers prefered hangout.

Have a great six weeks. Make sure you do have some lesiure time.

Here's a link to my journals and photos on Cambodia.
