hows things dr. snow?
glad to hear you are coming for a visit. Belfast is a totally different place now compared to ten years ago. The IRA has all but disarmed and the loyalists look to follow suit. Belfast has had massive inward investment and is generally a safe place to visit. There are however places not so safe, as in any major city these days. Any good guide book will keep you on the straight and narrow. If you want to get a feel for the city and an insight into the troubles then take a "Black Taxi Tour" - it'll bring you aroung all the main areas associated with the 30 years of the troubles in a safe and informative way. As for the shankill and ardoyne areas, its best to spend as little time here as possible. Sinse paramilitary violence has all but stopped, sectarian violence has come to the forefront between republican and loyalist areas. Shankill is a predominanty loyalist area while Ardoyne is predominantly republican, both with extremely active and polarised sections of the community. My advice is to go to Belfast city centre and enjoy yourself, its safe to pass through the ardoyne/shankill area as the majority of people are normal people just going about their day.
Enjoy your stay. Ireland should not be associated with terrorism anymore. We are long removed from that.
