Dhow or Boats from Dubai by dutopia on 16 September 2006 4:15am
With a break from college I will be travelling from January for most of the year with a friend of mine. It will be spanning most of Asia with emphasis on India, China and Thailand. The most economical route we are able to take is flying to Dubai from Dublin, where I live. I remember Michael bumming a life on a Dhow to Bombay in "Around the world in 80 days", and would love to take a similar approach. Does anyone know if Dhows are still operating? And if it would be possible to actually get a ride on one? I have my doubts obviously because Michaels trip was nearly 20 years ago! Any advice, knowledge or experience would be greatly appreciated!

My short trite answer to your headline question would be 'neither, fly Emirates!'
I suspect it is quite difficult now to travel by Dhow from Dubai. In the intervening 20 years Dubai has transformed into a 21st Century super modern city and probably you would be lucky to find a dhow outside a museum.
There may be chances on cargo ships but I would imagine you would be regarded as rather an oddball to try it. Best of luck anyway.

there is a ferry from sharjah(20 mins from dubai) to bander abbas in iran which is popular with asian commuters and you wouldnt be seen as an odd ball. other than that the only dhows in dubai are on the creek and cost about 10 pence to cross from deira to bur dubai.
