  The Chatter Box : Travel
Oxford by KMeadows on 14 October 2006 5:27pm
A few weeks ago, I visited England for the first time--I attended an academic conference in Oxford. I was able to blow off a few sessions to run around town, and I loved it. I was there with my partner, and it was particularly fun for him as we were able to visit his father's old college. Plus, he's a medievalist, and there's a few buildings around for him to check out. All in all, great fun. I've never done so much pub-crawling in my life. :) AFter that, before heading back home (Gettysburg, Pa, USA) we spent a day in London--visited the Tower (in the rain!), then had a tasty Italian dinner at Piccadilly Circus. What a madhouse. :) Anyway, I just wanted to share that. I think the thing I noticed and loved best about Oxford--the thing that sticks out the most that we just don't have here--was that there are no electrical lines overhead. I HATE that--it feels like you're constantly trapped under a net--it was nice to look up and just see trees, sky, and old, old buildings. :)

KMeadows, it just depends on where you live in the USA. We don't have overheard wires everyhwere in my area!

Really? That sounds wonderful--I don't think I've ever been anywhere in the States that didn't have them. I'm going to be keeping a real eye out from now on. :)

When I say, in my area, I mean my neighborhood. Of course, some of the old areas haven't put the lines underground. It's a huge country and it would be amajor project!!! Most new areas are putting wires under ground though. Where did you say you live?
